More and more children are subjected to tonsillectomies. The number of operations in children younger than 15 years old has increased significantly.
After tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy kids may have vomiting and nausea. So, physicians recommend administering corticosteroids during surgeries in order to reduce these post-operation side consequences.
Unfortunately, while corticosteroids lower risks/severity related to nausea and vomiting, they are associated with several other troubles. They may cause bleeding during and after tonsillectomies. Recent studies have manifested that the number of complications after tonsillectomies has enhanced during some last years. Since number of tonsillectomies becomes higher, complications occur more frequently too.
Some scientists decided to determine whether bleeding occurs after tonsillectomies because of corticosteroids. They attempted to learn whether there is any significant difference in appearing of bleeding between kids who apply the corticosteroid dexamethasone during tonsillectomies and those who don’t receive this preparation. So, the scientists enrolled more than 300 children in the study.
Results of the trial have displayed that bleeding of the levels I and II are increased by 5% in those that administer a single quantity of dexamethasone during tonsillectomy.
So, corticosteroids don’t maximize the risk connected with post-operation bleeding substantially. However prescribers doubt about safety of corticosteroids taken during tonsillectomies, they don’t enhance serious bleeding events essentially.
