WADA president: we don’t plan to prohibit caffeine in sports

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) considers that caffeine should belong to prohibited substances of the World Anti-Doping Agency. The president of the AOC John Coates confirms that caffeine promotes addiction to sleeping remedies and tranquilizers.
It is known that the Australian swimmers that participated at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics administered sleeping tablets Stilnox. Thus, John Coates confirms that administration of caffeine resulted in administration of Stilnox.
Stilnox is often sold under the commercial name Zolpidem. It is a sleeping remedy that is administered in case of insomnia.
The president of AOC claims that athletes use caffeine in order to increase performance. Consumption of this substance leads to insomnia. So, athletes have to use sleeping remedies for treatment of insomnia.
The AOC and Swimming Australia desire to ban consumption of caffeine. It is their response to the disgrace linked with Grant Hackett. A physician recommended taking Stilnox to this swimmer at the time of the 2003 World Championships. As a result, Grant Hackett became addicted to this sleeping remedy.
Grant Hackett is a prominent swimmer. He won many competitions, including the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Alan Thompson, the former coach of the Australian Olympic Team, has also affirmed that administration of Stilnox is widely spread among Australian swimmers.
Stilnox was never on the list of prohibited drugs. Anti-doping agencies didn’t conduct tests to disclose intake of this product.
But when it comes to caffeine, earlier it was banned by the WADA. But since it became widely spread and used in society, it was excluded from the list of banned drugs.
John Fahey, the president of the WADA, notes that the WADA made the right decision and excluded caffeine from list of banned substances. He claimed that caffeine would not be included in the list of prohibited medications again.
However a lot of experts claim that caffeine is a performance enhancer, John Fahey contests this argument. He affirms that caffeine doesn’t impact on performance. The president of the WADA concludes that no any scientific literature describes capacity of caffeine to enhance performance.

Former steroid users that have completed their bans are allowed to compete at Olympics

The runner Dwain Chambers, who successfully served his 2-year ban for application of anabolic steroids, was named the representative of Great Britain in the 2012 London Olympics.
Chambers worries about the way to represent the native country. As for the British Olympic Association (BOA), they don’t want to see him taking part in the Olympic Games. Certain former British Olympians don’t support the consumer of steroids as well.
Dwain Chambers administered the steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) introduced by Patrick Arnold. After Don Catlin developed a method which could detect THG, Chambers tested positive for this steroid. It was on November 7, 2003.
Undoubtedly, intake of the steroid spoiled his reputation. When he tried to return to professional sports, the BOA decided to change the laws in order to prevent appearing of the sprinter in the 2012 London Olympics. The BOA has elaborated the rules that ban steroid users from Olympics for the whole life.
Elaborating this rule, the BOA violated the doping code of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This factor resulted in numerous disputes and news.
The case was even presented in the Court of Arbitration for Sports. Loyd Moynihan, the chairman of the BOA, put essential efforts in order to prevent appearing of Dwain Chambers or other consumers of steroids at Olympics. Sebastian Coe and Daley Thompson, former Olympians, loudly supported efforts of the BOA.
Daley Thompson stated that Britain should not compromise. He noted that Britain should not listen to the rest of the world that don’t desire to have high standards in sports. The Court of Arbitration for Sports acted on behalf of the WADA. Chambers was allowed to be the representative of Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics. This case turned out to be an open door for other athletes that have served their suspensions to participate in Olympics.
The cyclist David Millar and the shot-putter Carl Myerscough that have served their bans for intake of steroids will compete at the 2012 Olympics as well.
Despites wasting much time to prevent appearing of steroid users at Olympics, the BOA finally stated that not only Chambers but also Millar, Myerscough or any other sportsperson that has served a suspension successfully may compete at Olympic Games. Andy Hunt, the CEO of the BOA, has confirmed that any athlete is treated the same way.

Austrian authorities helped steroid dealer to return to Slovenia

Lately a huge steroid chain was busted in Austria. It was defined that this company got 40 million Euros due to illegal distribution of steroids. Mihael Karner was considered to be the leader of the steroid empire. The USA asked Austria to extradite this person to the US. But he wasn’t extradited. This person paid one million Euros to Austrian authorities that sent him to Slovenia, his native country.
Slovenia’s laws are not the same as Austrian’s ones. According to the Constitution of this country, it is banned to extradite Slovenians to another country. Mihael Karner turned out to be a lucky individual. If he had not avoided the extradition to the USA, he would have probably gone to 40 years in prison.
Federal prosecutors started the investigation related to this steroid empire in 2005. The steroid empire began to function earlier. Federal prosecutors found that since 2000 till 2008 the company earned 40 million Euros due to illicit sale of steroids.
Federal prosecutors determined in 2005 that Mihael Karner and his wife were implicated in illicit distribution of steroids but they couldn’t prosecute them because the Karners were in Austria. But later steroid laws in Austria were changed due to suppression by the US. Furthermore, the US promoted the arrest of Mihael Karner and his wife.
Although the US attempts to enforce other countries of the world to extradite steroid dealers to the USA, it doesn’t have great success in this area. But those who were implicated in “Musclebear” and “British Dragon” were extradited from Cyprus and Thailand to the USA. That time the US had a victory.
As for Mihael Karner, the USA believed that he would be extradited. That’s why the US was shocked, when it was found that Karner arrived to Slovenia safely. So, the USA was defeated this time in the struggle against steroids.

Jonny Spelman’s dreams

Mrs. Spelman and her husband tried to prevent spreading news about her son’s application of steroids. She wasted a lot of money in courts for this goal. But as you know, any person could read the news about the youngest British sportsperson who was caught taking forbidden drugs and banned from rugby. Each person expected that Jonny Spelman would thank his parents for the efforts to hide the truth. But Jonny’s attitude turned out to be opposite.
Spelman’s son wants to become a celebrated professional bodybuilder. He intends to get the title of Mr. Olympia.
As for usage of steroids, Jonny Spelman was very open. He wrote about own administration of steroids on Bodybuilding.com and on bodybuilding forums of other sites. He noted that he applied Anavar, Dianabol, Winstrol and Testosterone. Jonny Spelman shared own experience and asked for instructions about usage of certain steroids and combinations. Jonny Spelman also asked about ways of being on PCT.
Since he wrote about administration of steroids openly, administrators of the site Bodybuilding.com banned him. It caused the search of Jonny’s school room. As a result, drug paraphernalia was discovered.
Jonny Spelman reports that although his parents are rich, they don’t desire to support financially his efforts to become a professional bodybuilder. They have told him that he has to move out, if he desires to be a bodybuilder. But the young athlete has goals and he doesn’t desires to leave them. He intends to post workout videos on YouTube and receive money in exchange. He concludes that viewers of YouTube play a great role in his life because they support his efforts.

Steroid users experience unhealthy fat distribution

Recently some experts at Lulea University of Technology and Umea University conducted a valuable research. Specialists studied and determined links between intake of steroids, body fat distribution and certain side effects of anabolic steroids. The study has manifested that consumers of steroids may suffer from abnormal fat distribution which can lead to heart attacks and other problems linked with cardiovascular system.
The results of the study and conclusions were published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.
10 elite lifters from Sweden were enrolled in the study. They administer anabolic steroids regularly. Thus, it was studied role of steroids in fat distribution.
It is known that lifters that apply anabolic-androgenic steroids face risks experiencing heart attacks. The experts at Lulea University of Technology and Umea University have studied the way body fat is distributed in lifters that administer steroids possessing anabolic and androgenic characteristics. It has been determined that unhealthy fat distribution can be a reason for dysfunctions of cardiovascular system.
The lifters who were involved in the study were divided into two groups. Fat distribution was studied in all lifters. The lifters of one group administered anabolic steroids. The lifters of the other group didn’t apply steroids.
The study has displayed that those that take steroids have lower fat deposits below the waist. So, they have more reduced levels of gynoid fat.
DEXA scanner which is normally utilized to study osteoporosis has been used in order to determine fat distribution by the specialists of the study.

Colin Daynes didn’t try to defend himself, when he failed drug test

The Canadian wrestler Colin Daynes tested positive for forbidden medicines. It means that he will not compete at the Summer Olympics. He was sentenced to 2-year ban.
Last year the sportsperson was chosen for the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame.
The wrestler was banned by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports. He failed a drug test, when he got a gold medal in the 74-kg division.
Colin Daynes tested positive for Drostanolone, Boldenone, Tamoxifen and Furosemide. Each of these medications is in the list of forbidden medicines of the World Anti-Doping Agency. As for Drostanolone and Boldenone, they are anabolic steroids. Furosemide represents a diuretic preparation. It is used as a masking agent for other medications. Tamoxifen is a product which is advised for prevention of undesirable results which occur due to steroid cycles.
The athlete admitted to administration of prohibited products and accepted the sentence. He claimed that he administered the banned medications in order to get recovery from an injury. The athlete told to The Star Monday night that he wanted to recover in order to be able to participate in the 2012 Olympics. The wrestler noted that a naturopathic doctor advised to administer these medicines. The wrestler also added that he hadn’t known that the products were prohibited. According to his statements, if he had known, he wouldn’t have participated in competitions.
Colin Daynes was going to represent Canada at the Olympics again. He represented his country at the 1996 Olympics which were in Atlanta.
Daynes didn’t attempt to defense himself. The wrestler noted that there was no any difference whether the prohibited drugs were found in the blood or not. They were in the system.
Earlier Colin Daynes also competed in mixed martial arts. He had to qualify internationally. The wrestler hoped that he would compete at the Summer Olympics in London last time. Then his career comes to the end. But he was banned  because of positives for prohibited products.
Bill Hogarth, the personal trainer of Colin Daynes, claims that that the things are too bad. But the wrestler didn’t want to lie. Hogarth hopes that the wrestler’s reputation will not be destroyed. His career was marked by getting of 62 gold medals, 11 silver and 5 bronze medals.

1 kg of testosterone powder for self-administration

Carlton Alloysius Hayes, an Australian man, was caught possessing almost a kg of Testosterone Propionate. He placed order for powder of this drug on internet and got it from overseas. This person also desired to buy benzyl benzoate, a chemical which is utilized in order to prepare solution for injections from powder. When police officers learnt that this man ordered this chemical, he was asked about purpose of purchasing it. Carlton Alloysius Hayes said that he wanted to obtain it for a friend. But he noticed that he couldn’t remember the name of the friend.
Then Hayes himself contacted policemen and asked them to come to his place. When police officers came, Carlton Alloysius Hayes showed that he had 2 bags of white powder. He also acknowledged that he had ordered benzyl benzoate in order to mix it with the powder and ready solution for injections.
Hayes weighed about 156 kg, when he was in the court. He noticed that he couldn’t lose weight, although he trained at the gym. Thus, he administered steroids to lose weight and look better. This man claimed that he hadn’t had any plan to distribute steroids. He bought the testosterone powder for personal usage.
A defense attorney for Carlton Alloysius Hayes noticed that his client had a good reputation. He always worked hardly.
Although he had to be sentenced to prison because he purchased steroids from overseas, the judge’s decision was to give him certain months of suspended jail. Thus, this man escaped from prison.

Polish police’s wars on illegal distribution of steroids

An illegal group that was dealing with manufacture and sale of anabolic steroids was busted by Poland’s police officers. More than 90 policemen and border guard were involved in the investigation connected with this illicit company. Customers were chiefly from North America. Police detained 19 persons: 6 women and 13 men. They were accused of illegal manufacture and sale of steroids and money laundering.
Investigators defined that the group was dealing with steroids since March 2008. The drug ring advertised steroids for obtaining of muscle mass and health in general. The preparations were offered for sale on internet. Individuals from the USA, Canada, France, Belgium, etc. ordered and acquired illegal medicines.  Steroids were packed in fake packages and sent to customers. There was a person who was responsible for getting money and transferring it to members of the drug ring.
Homes and business offices of the drug ring were raided. Police officers found large measures of steroids and packages that were prepared for shipment abroad. Several vehicles, including BMW X6, Mercedes S500 and Jeep Grand, watches, jewelry and other things were seized. The total value of confiscated objects and money was estimated. It was about 1 million Polish zlotys.
It was defined by police officers that three persons composed the leadership of the drug ring. They face 15 years in jail.
This investigation conducted by Polish police officers turned out to be successful. It was not the first successful drug investigation in this country. Last year Poland’s police busted another illegal drug ring. 7 persons were arrested. About 80 police officers were involved in that investigation. Police officers also identified preparations which were offered for sale by that drug ring.

New findings of specialists at Boston University

According to a trial, treatment with dutasteride (Avodart), a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, doesn’t influence negatively on muscle mass in healthy men who use testosterone.
A research related to this issue was conducted. While fat-free mass was increased by 0,6-7,1 kg during 20 weeks in men that used dutasteride and Testosterone Enanthate, fat-free mass was increased by 0,8-8,1 kg in those who administered placebo and testosterone. As for muscle power, sexual functions and volume of prostate, they didn’t differ in males of these two groups.
5-alpha reductase inhibitors are used clinically for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and androgenic alopecia. These are disorders which commonly affect middle-aged and elderly men.
DHT represents the main metabolite of testosterone. But the role of DHT in human development is not studied well. It is suggested that DHT has relevant role in development of prostate and phallus.
Middle-aged and old men with low testosterone levels who apply testosterone medicines have risks connected with decreased muscle mass and sexual problems.
Specialists also put efforts to develop nonsteroidal selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs). It is affirmed that SARMs and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors are safe because DHT is supposedly not necessary for effects on fat-free mass, strength and sexual activity. It is also doubted whether DHT plays any role for androgen’s effects on hematocrit, hemoglobin, lipids and several other factors.
Shalender Bhasin and his colleagues at the Boston University have conducted a clinical trial in order to see whether 5?-reduction to DHT is required in order to mediate androgen’s effects on muscle mass. Moreover, the experts evaluated role of 5?-reduction on sexual functions, hematocrit and levels of lipid.
The research conducted by Bhasin and his colleagues implicated healthy men that were 18- 50 years old and had normal levels of testosterone. They used Testosterone Enanthate and dutasteride or placebo. Quantities of Testosterone Enanthate varied from 50 to 600 mg weekly.
Since 5 ?-reductase inhibitors increase testosterone levels, all males were given also gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist in order to block natural testosterone.
The results of the study manifested that fat-free mass was enhanced due to usage of testosterone. It didn’t differ significantly in males of these two groups. Muscle power which was also increased due to application of testosterone didn’t differ between the two groups as well. Sexual activity, prostate volume, sebum production, hemoglobin, acne, hematocrit didn’t differ essentially between those who were given placebo and dutasteride.
The experts affirm that effectiveness of 5?-reductase inhibitors may be limited in males that have normal or high testosterone levels. That’s why it is necessary to check testosterone levels in order to determine how bodies will respond to 5 ?-reductase inhibitors.
So, the study has manifested that muscle mass is not affected by 5?-reductase inhibitors.  Males should know that if they have high testosterone levels or introduce exogenous testosterone in their bodies, 5?-reductase inhibitors will not lead to shrunken prostate.

Spain’s police arrested Dr. Alberto Beltran Nino and some other persons

Spain’s police officers busted a large doping ring.
According to reports of police officers, athletes that tested positive at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Vuelta a Espana acquired steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs from this doping ring.
10 individuals that were involved in this doping ring were arrested. Professional cyclists and other sportspersons had links with this illegal drug network.  It represented a popular doping ring in the world of top athletes.
The investigation was nicknamed “Operation Skype”. Dr.  Alberto Beltran Nino was the leader of the drug ring. He is a former doctor of Liberty Seguros team. This man was detained and sentenced to imprisonment, when he tried to fly from Madrid to Columbia. Cezar Perez, the former personal trainer of the athlete Marta Dominguez, was also arrested by Spain’s police.
Although the center of the illegal drug ring was established in Barcelona, it represented an international company. The ring was related to Morocco and Columbia. Steroids, HGH and EPO CERA were offered for sale by this illicit drug ring.
Dr. Beltran also worked with Xacobeo-Galicia team. David Garcia, the road bicycle racer of this team, tested positive for EPO at the 2010 Vuelta.
The investigation began summer last year. It was originally connected with the Spanish runner Jose Luis Blanco after he was sentenced to 2-year ban due to positives for prohibited drugs.
