There are three classes of steroids: corticosteroids, estrogens and progestogens, and anabolic-androgenic steroids.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids are medicines which are also widely used in medicine. They have ability to treat several types of breast cancer, cancer of testicles, anemia, etc. These products are frequently prescribed to get better and faster recovery after certain surgeries. Burn victims, persons with HIV/AIDS administer anabolic-androgenic steroids for prevention of muscle loss. Certain steroids are also indicated to treat osteoporosis. These remedies are also prescribed in case of infertility.
Furthermore, anabolic-androgenic steroids are taken for athletic needs. These products can stimulate muscle growth and promote enhancing energy. That’s why a lot of sportspeople and bodybuilders administer them for performance-enhancing effects. Some anabolic-androgenic steroids are capable also to burn fat, making muscles hard.
Intake of anabolic-androgenic steroids for non-therapeutic needs is banned under laws of some countries. Those who manufacture, sell, purchase and take these products illegally may be sentenced to prison and/or fines. These drugs belong to illegal substances in some countries because they may lead to different side consequences. While some negative effects are mild and disappear after discontinuation of usage, others are dangerous and even irreversible.
